INTRODUCTION
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams , or entire
organizations .
Specialist literature debates various viewpoints, contrasting Eastern and Western approaches to leadership, and also (within the West) United States versus European approaches.
U.S. academic environments define leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task ".
Leadership seen from a European and nonacademic perspective encompasses a view of a leader who can be moved not only by communitarian goals but also by the search for personal power .
Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage, and discipline .
Other historical views of leadership have addressed the seeming contrasts between secular and religious leadership.
Christian thinking on leadership has often emphasized stewardship of divinely provided resources human and material and their deployment in accordance with a Divine plan.
Historical Background of Benue State
Benue state was created on February 3, 1976. It was one of the seven new states created by the military administration headed by late General Murtala Muhammed, which increased the number of states in the federation from twelve to nineteen. The state derives its name from the River Benue which is the second largest river in the country and the most outstanding geographic feature in the state.
At creation, the state comprised three local governments in the Tiv-speaking areas, namely Gboko, Katsina-Ala, and Makurdi; one (Otukpo) in the Idoma-speaking areas and three (Ankpa, Idah and Dekina) in the Igala-speaking areas, which were excised from Kwara state.
Today, however, with the creation of more states and local governments in 1991, the Igala-speaking local govrnments were excised to form part of the present Kogi state.
Presently, Benue has twenty-three local governments, with the Tiv speaking area having fourteen while the Idoma-Igede area.
LOCATION
The state’s geographic location in the country is quite unique: it lies roughly in the middle of the country and shares boundaries with six other states:
Nassarawa to the North, Taraba to the East, Kogi and Enugu states to the West and Ebonyi and Cross-River states to the South. It also shares an international boundary with the Republic of Cameroun on the South-East.
Benue state has a landmass of 33,955 square kilometers and lies between Latitudes 6.5° and 8.5° North and Longitudes 7.47° N and 10 East.
THE PEOPLE
The state comprised of several ethnic groups: Tiv, Idoma, Igede, Etulo, Abakpa, Jukun, Hausa, Akweya and Nyifon. The Tiv are the dominant ethnic group, occupying 14 local government areas, while the Idoma and Igede occupy the remaining nine local government areas.
Most of the people are farmers while the inhabitants of the riverine areas engage in fishing as their primary or important secondary occupation.
The people of the state are famous for their cheerful and hospitable disposition as well as rich cultural heritage.
CULTURE
Benue State possesses a rich and diverse cultural heritage which finds expression in colourful cloths, exotic masquerades, supplicated music and dances.
Traditional dances from Benue State have won acclaim at national and international cultural festivals.
The most popular of these dances include Ingyough, Ange, Anchanakupa, Swange and Ogirinya among others.
NEGLIGENCE OF LIVES PROTECTION AND PROPERTIES OF NIGERIAN CITIZENS BY ITS LEADERS
The lives and properties of the citizens of this country is a case which this write up metamorphosis nor emphasized.
In the case of Benue state where the emphasis of this write up is been focused is been neglected by the President otherwise FG of this Nation called Nigeria.
In the early this year, over 73 people were murdered in cold blood which was reported to the Security agencies likewise the FG in writing by our sleepless governor His Excellency, Gov. Samuel Ortom.
No ear ,has been listen nor eyes has been seen into it despite the effort which our governor is doing in bringing peace in the state.
After a month of the 73 massacre, over 29 people were still murdered in Okpokwu local government in Benue state and as usual our caring governor has sent another letter to the same agencies including the FG what we get is to sent the senseless IGP to Benue.
Upon coming to Benue state by IGP we only received insults when he gets back to Abuja, what we here is "What is happening to Benue State is communal clashes " which is an insult to our governor and the good abiding citizens of Benue State.
The killings still continues, and later heard the pronouncement of the arrival of the operation Ayem Akpatuma (Cat Race) one month before it's arrival to enable the Fulani herdsmen go out of the state inorder to be back after there operations to continue its killings.
This is simply genocide and Jihadist agenda which is taken into consideration by the incumbent President of the country if not why is the incessant killings without prompt actions?
If this people are terrorist from Libya trained by Gaddafi ,the question are:
1. How manage does they enter into the country?
2. Who are there sponsors?
3. As the leader of this nation, how did you secure your borders?
4. As you now know are from outside, what makes you slow in declaring them terrorists and be treated as one?
In Benue leadership, only few of the leaders have the citizens at heart to mention but few Gov. Samuel Ortom,HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, Hon. Yisa Orker Jev, Chief Edward Ujege, Engr.Dr. Terlumun Utsev, Prof. Wole Soyinka,Wantaregh Paul Iorpuu Unongo,Mr Terver Akase, Mr Targema Bem, Comr.Ama Moses, Comr. Iorshe Terkimbi Iorshe and host of others who there names are not included here but said there minds both on Radio stations, TV stations, and the Internet.
I want to categorically states here that, some of the Nigerian leaders are for themselves and for the people.
Today at one of the IDP camps at Daudu a mother lost her one and only child due to lack of proper medical attention, but what some of our leaders are up to is to endorsed people for second term, attend political rallies etc.
Upon whole of this killings they are less concerned about the people who they pretend they are ruling over.
May God disgrace those who are refusing vehemently or neglected to protect the lives and properties of the citizens but tend to be selfish.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I want to recommend the governor of Benue State, His Excellency Dr Samuel Ortom over his good efforts in taking the killings of his people at heart as his personal business, may God guide and protect you and give you more wisdom and strength to be strong in carrying out your duties as a true leader to show the difference.
I want to also thank those who voiced there ill feelings over the continuous killings by this morons both in Newspapers, Radios, Tvs and the Internet may God bless you and help you to do more.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, am calling on the international community to intervene into the incessant killings in Nigeria to see the lives and properties of the citizens more important than any other thing.
If there no citizen there will be no leadership.
Thank you and God bless.
