2019: APC has nothing to fear over Atiku’s exit, says Faparusi

Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Bamidele Faparusi, has said the exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not affect the party in 2019.
He added that President Muhammadu Buhari’s mass appeal in the northern and southern parts of the country would continue to soar.
He said: “The President needs no support from Alhaji Atiku to return to power in 2019. In the 2007 presidential election, Buhari came second with over 7 million votes as an individual while Atiku, a sitting Vice President came third with over two million votes.”
Faparuti noted that the call by Governor Rochas Okorocha and other APC governors to accord the President the right of first refusal ahead of of 2019 was to underestimate Buhari’s electrifying acceptability.
He explained that the President enjoys immense popularity within and outside APC. He added that the prudent lifestyle, anti-corruption posture and masses-oriented policies of the nation’s leader was unquantifiable.
Faparusi said Buhari and APC remain solid and acceptable to Nigerians with or without Atiku, describing the noise over his defection as mere fantasy hinged on old glory.
He said: “President Buhari will win free and fair in APC primary in 2019, that was the principal reason why some over- ambitious APC stalwarts may want to leave the party to pursue their ambitions. Any other reason given for defection was a fallacy and cheap blackmail .
“Nigeria can’t criminalise defection , it is however, a right which I believe should be exercised responsibly. We can only have one President at a time and there is no reason aside selfish motive, to want to change a focused, sincere and performing President like Buhari.
“I urge other still nursing the ambition of displacing the President to do that responsibly by facing the President in a free and fair primary in 2019, instead of leaving the party or sowing divisive seeds”.
Faparusi said those calling for automatic ticket for President Muhammadu Buhari are only playing to the gallery.
“People calling for automatic ticket for the president are only playing to the gallery, as such idea will neither serve the overall interest of the party nor the President.
“To the best of my knowledge and understanding of politics, asking for automatic ticket for the President is tantamount to playing down his popularity.
“Going by records, Buhari remains an enigma being the first Nigerian to defeat a powerful sitting President. That is why I support the call for a free, fair and transparent primary in the presidential poll, the way I want it in Ekiti governorship”, he said.
Faparusi said a free and fair primary is the only tonic the APC needs to win next year’s governorship poll in Ekiti, adding that imposition will wreck the party and render its candidate useless at the poll

Responding, Shaibu, thanked the striker for remembering his home.

Row over missing clothes turns bloody

A protracted disagreement between Anesthesia Onwunezi, a graduating student of Religion at the Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, and her roommate, Glory John, a 200-Level Education Guidance and Counselling student, turned bloody last Sunday. Anesthesia was said to have stabbed Glory during an argument over her missing clothes. EKENE AHANEKU (600-Level Medicine and Surgery) reports.
What started as an argument between two students of the Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, last Sunday, ended in a bloody scuffle. A graduating student of Religion, Anesthesia Onwunezi (known as Stacy) allegedly stabbed her roommate, Glory Ezinne John, a 200-Level Education Guidance and Counselling student, with a pair of scissors during a disagreement over clothes.
It all happened at the Albert Akaegbulam Memorial Hostel, an off-campus Hall of Residence, at the school’s Back Gate.
During the melee, Stacy allegedly used the scissors to pierce Glory’s face and her hand. Stacy subsequently went to report the matter at a police station in a bid to get Glory arrested.
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the roommates had been living like cat and mouse since they were allotted the same room in the hostel. They usually engaged in exchange of hot words over missing clothes. Other occupants of the hostel, it was learnt, regularly intervened each time they had a disagreement.
The latest disagreement began when Glory found out that some of her clothes were missing. Suspecting that Stacy must have stolen the clothes, Glory picked Stacy’s clothes from her wardrobe and hid them.
Narrating how the fight started, Glory told CAMPUSLIFE: “I always noticed that my clothes in the room were getting missing. I noticed this a few weeks after I became Stacy’s roommate about 10 months ago. Whenever I asked her about the missing clothes, she would ignore my questions. When this did not stop, I reported to the hostel manager who did not respond. I kept having my clothes and other personal belongings missing until I decided to hide Stacy’s clothes.”
So when Stacy returned to the hostel, she noticed that some of her clothes were missing from where she kept them. When she enquired from Glory, the 200-Level Education Guidance and Counseling student owned up, saying the clothes were in her possession.
“I confronted her with evidence that she had been the one stealing my clothes. I told her if she didn’t release my clothes, I won’t bring out her own clothes too,” Glory said.
The argument continued till the evening and Stacy became impatient to retrieve her clothes from Glory. When Glory stepped towards the kitchen corner in their apartment, Stacy demanded the release of her clothes but Glory refused. Stacy swiftly picked the pair of scissors stabbed Glory in the face and cut her fingers.
“Stacy’s aim was to kill me. After she stabbed me and I was bleeding, I made an attempt to run outside but I discovered that she had locked the door. I struggled to open the door, while I was screaming for help. Other occupants rushed to the scene and forced the door open to rescue me,” Glory explained.
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that Stacy turned down entreaties by neighbours, urging her to take Glory to the hospital for treatment after the bloody fracas. Instead, she went to report the incident at a police to get Glory arrested for theft. Stacy allegedly told the police that all the hostel occupants ganged up to harm her.
Stains of blood welcomed the policemen at the hostel. The hostel occupants led the police to the clinic where Glory was being treated. When the policemen found out the statement given them by Stacy ran contrary to what happened in hostel, they returned to their station without making any arrest. At this time, Stacy had allegedly fled station.
When he learnt about the incident, the hostel manager was said to have reported the matter at the Criminal Investigation Department of the police in Owerri.
CAMPUSLIFE made efforts to get Stacy to comment, but she neither picked calls nor replied to text messages our correspondent sent to her mobile phone. A man identified as Stacy’s brother, who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE on telephone, said: “The matter has been resolved. I won’t give further comment on this.”
He terminated the call afterwards and switched off his phone.
Glory’s brother, Kingsley, denied the matter had been resolved. He threatened to take up the matter to ensure Stacy is punished for hurting his sister.
Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, Kingsley said: “I still don’t know the reason the police have not arrested Stacy up till this moment. We can no longer tolerate this excuse from the police. A citizen’s life was threatened, yet the police expect we sweep the matter under the carpet. I will push on this fight to ensure my sister gets justice.”
When our correspondent visited Glory on Monday night, she confirmed Stacy’s parents and siblings visited her, pleading on her behalf.
Glory said: “Her parents were with me for hours, begging me not to allow the matter get out of hand. But, Stacy has remained unremorseful and has not called nor visited me since the incident took place.”
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the landlord of the property had issued Stacy a quit notice. She was expected to pack her belongings out of the hostel last Tuesday.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) Director of Information, Godwin Joseph, described the incident as disturbing, wondering why a student could go to the extent of threatening the life of her roommate. He said Stacy’s behaviour was an indication of how senior colleagues treated freshers.
He said: “We will continue to plead with the school management as they are about to open the new hostels in the school. They should allow all 100-Level students to be accommodated on campus. This will help reduce the common incidents of senior students maltreating their junior colleagues because they share rooms in off-campus hostels.
“We understand the effort the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Victoria Obasi, is making to protect students on and off-campus, especially the female students. We expect this incident to further accelerate efforts to ensure safety of freshers. We thank God that the student that was stabbed is responding to treatment, but her face is left with scars of injuries.”

‘20 Nigerian girls sold off’

A Nigerian returnee from Libya has spoken of how 20 Nigerian girls were sold off as slaves in Libya.
He also gave a chilling account of how he and others were fleeced and transported to Libya with a promise of better life in Europe, only to land in penury and end up in jail in the north African country.
Many of the returnees, who are camped in Benin-City, the Edo State capital, look skinny and exhausted. Some of the women are carrying babies, whose fathers are not known.
Alex Otoide is one of the 168 Nigerians evacuated from the north African country, and are currently being rehabilitated by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The governor has promised to train them in skills required to reintegrate them back into the society.
Otoide said he witnessed the sale of 20 Nigeria girls in the prison where they were all kept.
“They sold about 20 girls in the night. I saw it. It was God that saved me.”
Recounting his ordeal, he said: “I left Nigeria with N500,000. I spent six months in Libya jail after the man that took my money ran away.
“We were 55 that travelled from here to Libya, 25 people died in the desert.
“More than seven people died from hunger and thirst inside the prison.
”Can’t you see how I look lean and hungry? I need to go for treatment.”
He said a fellow whose name he gave as Charles also a Nigerian, collected the N500,000 from him.
Apart from persuading them to travel, he also collected money in addition to running a transit camp in Libya for those travelling illegally across the Mediterranean to Europe.
Some of the deportees said Charles collected money for the purpose of taking them to Europe only to abandon them in Libya.
They claimed that Charles had several bank accounts with different names through which he collected money from victims.
He is also accused of running the Libyan camp where Nigerians are kept for days without food.
Another returnee Osas Blessing said Charles is among those nicknamed “burgers” or “connection man” on the Libya route.
He said: “I gave Charles N450,000 but when I got to Libya he increased it to N600,000. He is very wicked. He does not care for human life. He is a Benin man. He will say if you die you die. He pushed us into the sea at the wrong time.
“I heard he just left Nigeria with new passengers to Libya. He has frustrated many Nigerians.”
Another returnee who refused to give his name said another Nigerian known simply as “Biafra” was responsible for many atrocities committed against Nigerian migrants in Libya.

Buhari to Nigerians: I’ll need your vote in future

President Muhammadu Buhari has hinted that he may run again.
Buhari dropped the hint jokingly while interacting with the Nigerian community in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, even though he did not say if he would run in 2019 when the next presidential election is due.
The President is in Abidjan for the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit.
Apologising for keeping those that came for the interactive session waiting, Buhari said he insisted on Governors Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom State) and Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi State) being present, so that Nigerians in Côte d’Ivoire from the two states would be happy that he was accompanied by their governors and that might earn him votes in future.
He said: “First, I want to apologise for keeping you for too long, sitting; this is because I insisted on the governors attending this meeting. This is why I came along with them so that when we are going to meet you, when you are going to meet the rest of Nigerians, if you tell them that their governors were in the company of the President, I think that will be another vote for me in future. I’m very pleased that they were able to turn up.”
The hall immediately erupted in laughter and clapping.
The President also said that his support for African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina, despite serving as minister in a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration was to further confirm his remarks at his inauguration on May 29th, 2015, that he belongs to everybody and nobody in particular.
The President was reacting to Adesina’s gratitude to his administration for supporting him to get the job. He is the first Nigerian to head the continental bank since it was set up in 1964.
He said: “The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) forgot to mention that he was serving in the PDP government as minister but all the same I picked him and recommended him for AfDB. I think it emphasised what I said during my swearing in that I’m for everybody, I’m for nobody. As long as you are a Nigerian be prepared to be on the receiving end from me.”
President Buhari thanked All Progressive Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for bringing him a beautiful piece of information which he was not aware of until now. He did not disclose the information, but promised to discuss it with Tinubu.
He said: “I also thank our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has brought me a very beautiful piece of information which I was not aware of until I sat down and read it this evening (Tuesday night). Thank you very much for your hardwork and I will discuss that paper with you.”
Adesina noted that the economy picked up soon after the President’s health got sound, “so it seems there is a correlation between the President’s health and the improved economy”.
On security, Adesina said the bank had released $250 million for the construction and rehabilitation of the Northeast, which was destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents.
He also told the President that the AfDB had constructed a big building behind the Yar’Adua Centre. It was started in 2016.
He said it was the first of such buildings by AfDB outside its Abidjan headquarters. He insisted that Buhari would inaugurate it.
Adesina said: “I want to thank you immensely. I want to thank God for your health because I must say that for all of us, that has been a big concern. But seeing you fit as a fiddle and seeing you back in action, we thank God for that and may God continue to give you great strength.
“Mr. President, as you must have noticed, there is a very strong correlation between your health and the economy and when you came back, the economy picked up after that. So we wish you great health so that the the economy can continue to pick.
“I also want to congratulate you for the economic growth and recovery plan that you have put in place and the incredible plan that you have put in place to bring the economy out of recession and also in terms of the fact that Nigeria has moved up in the World Bank ease of doing business index. It is to your leadership, vision and commitment that we want to commend you, Mr. President and to assure you of our strong support behind you and your government for the efforts to try and move Nigeria forward. We are solidly behind you, you can count on that.”
Adesina added: “I also want to thank you for your leadership on the Boko Haram issue because to draw investments into Nigeria, you absolutely have to have security. I think that securing our borders is very important – thanks to your leadership for that. I also thank you for all the efforts you have made in the Lake Chad Basin Area.
“I was with you in Paris where you led the efforts in reviving the Lake Chad Basin. As you know, Mr. President, the bank is very strongly behind that.”

Why I gave N450,000 gift to judge, by SAN

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria ( SAN ) Mr Paul Usoro has explained the circumstances in which he gave N450,000 to a judge of the National Industrial Court, Justice James Agbadu-Fishim. He said it was a gift, not a bribe.
Usoro, who is aspiring for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA presidency, was reacting to a statement credited to a human rights lawyer Prof Chidi Odinkalu.
Odinkalu said Usoro admitted “bribing” a judge and should not be allowed to run for the office.
“It is an insult to us all. We all have a duty to stop it (Usoro’s bid)… In a sane country, Paul Usoro should be facing disciplinary proceedings at best and should have been disbarred,” Odinkalu was quoted as saying.
But, Usoro, in a statement by a Partner in his firm, Munirudeen Liadi, said he and Justice Agbadu-Fishim had been friends and were known to each other long before His Lordship joined the Bench.
The SAN said he had only one case before the judge, and that before his firm was engaged handle the case, he gave a gift of N250,000 to the judge on August 5, 2014, about five months before his firm got the brief.
Usoro said all the three cash gifts he gave to the judge were at the judge’s request and that none was related to the case.
“These were requests based on longstanding friendship between Mr. Usoro and His Lordship and this fact is borne out by the text messages (which were analysed by EFCC) sent by His Lordship to Mr. Usoro requesting for assistance.  None of these messages remotely mentioned PH/150,” the statement said.
The SAN said as at  March 24, 2015 when the third and final gift of N200,000 was given to the judge, the client had agreed to pay his firm only N700,000 in full and final payment for handling the case, which he said was yet to be paid.
According to him, even if he was the type that offers bribes, it was laughable to suggest that he would “bribe” the judge with N450,000 – about 65 per cent of his legal fees – in a matter that was non-contentious.
“Mr. Usoro pointedly, categorically and consistently disclaimed any suggestion that he bribed or wished ‘to induce Honorable Justice Agbadu-Fishim or any other judicial officer’ and stated in his letters to EFCC that he ‘does not bribe or induce judges’ and ‘has never bribed or induced any Judge’,” the statement said.
Besides, Usoro cited Paragraph F, Rule 3 of the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers which permits judges to accept “personal gifts or benefits from relatives or personal friends to such extent and on such occasions as are recognised by custom”.
He added: “All the gifts to Agbadu-Fishim ‘are recognised by custom’ in all parts of Nigeria …one of those illustrative occasions was the burial of Agbadu-Fishim J’s relative which Mr. Usoro could not attend but sent financial assistance in lieu.”
The SAN said the judge did not deliver judgment on the case before he was transferred, nor did he make any rulings on the matter other than “routine adjournments”.
The statement added: “Absolutely nothing was done in the conduct of this matter by Agbadu-Fishim J that suggested, even remotely, the favoring of one party over the other and nobody, not even the opposing Counsel, has made any such suggestion.
“The Records of Proceedings are of course available for any and all to inspect and study.  Even as we write, the suit is yet to commence de novo (afresh).
“The contents of Mr. Usoro’s letters to the EFCC have not been factually disputed howsoever by anyone. Mr Usoro has not been charged to court for any infraction whatsoever and yet, Chidi Odinkalu claims that ‘Paul Usoro is charged with having bribed James Agbadu-Fishim” and that Mr. Usoro admitted ‘to having bribed a judge’.
“By our Nigerian cultures and based on religious principles, we are all obliged to show humanity to persons in need, not least, our friends and relatives, be they judicial officers or not.
“We indeed abhor and reject the presumption that a judicial officer who receives a gift from a practicing lawyer is ipso facto bent and corrupt.
“Such a negative notion is wholly erroneous and abysmally unfair to our upright and hard-working judicial officers who, despite their offices, remain friends and relatives of practicing lawyers even as they dispense justice fairly to one and all.”

The Ondo State Police Command has rescued three victims that were last week kidnapped along Ore-Lagos Expressway after five days in the captivity.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR WIFE

There are Lots of headache, frustration, unnecessary quarrel to be avoided if men will learn to understand wives. Living with a woman is not difficult at all, ignorance, immaturity and unrealistic expectations makes a man see his precious fiancee/ wife as a devil, demon,or witch!
Here are things women do that make them appear difficult but they are not, you just need to understand us.
1. WOMEN GET IRRITATED AND ANGRY BEFORE THEIR MENSTRUATION and may even be screaming, yelling or throwing things at you. You are not her problem, her cycle is. It is immaturity to bicker with her, shout her down or call her names because her system is disorganized. Immature men are huge disaster in relationships. Calm down. Respond to her calmly. Hold her hand or put your arms around her. Hug her a lot. Women need plenty of it during this period (physical touch is limited to the married).
2. SHE OFTEN GETS HORNY: Her cycle is also responsible; sometimes emotional upsurge. If you are single and courting and she's smothering you with hugs, kisses and affection, don't allow it. She's not in her right frame of mind. Help her by getting out of that tempting environment. If you are married, respond to her. She needs passionate love making at this period to calm her down. Some men don't get it when their wives use her body to ask for sex. If she's pulling you close, running her hands all over you, and giving unwanted pecks, you should get the message. You don't need to wait for her to ask. Women rarely ask for sex. It takes some boldness to do that.
3. SHE GETS FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY when you keep hurting her over and over again with your bad habit you refuse to change.
5. SHE EXPERIENCES MOOD SWINGS. She may be laughing in the morning, cry in the afternoon and be very nice at night. Women being emotional beings often experience mood swings. Because you are not as emotional as her, this may annoy you. Don't be, it is temporal, it will go with time.
6. WOMEN ARE MOVED BY WHAT THEY HEAR: That's why the naive ones fall for play boys. If you are courting, do not say anything romantic, it may turn her on. "I love you " is okay. "I admire you a lot" is decent. Anything like "your smile is gonna kill me completely" is off it. "You've got killer curves" is extreme, "your hips are so sexy" has killed her completely. If you genuinely love her, don't say things that will turn her on.
In marriage, you must deliberately say romantic words that turns her on for sex. Hubby knows how to get me in the mood. Just 2 or 3 sentences, my night is made!
7. WOMEN LIKE TO BE TAKEN CARE OF: Even if she's a billionaire, she still wants you to spend on her. It's a sign you really love and do care for her. She's not being greedy or lazy, she's just expressing her nature. We are created to receive, take and look up to our men. We feel loved that way.
8. WOMEN WANT MEN TO ASSIST WITH CHORES: It makes you look so adorable. When you are involved in things that matters to her, she will cherish you for life!
9 WOMEN WEAR WHAT IS NEEDED NOT WHAT THEY HAVE: A woman may complain she has no shoe to wear to an occasion, yet has 10 pairs on her shoe rack. What she means is, she does not have the perfect match for her clothe. While you may wear one pair of shoe to all occasion, women simply can't. She's not being extra vagant. We are simply made that way.
10: WOMEN TAKE TIME TO DRESS and may be late for an occasion when you plan to go out together. Give her extra time to dress. If you are to leave home by 10am, prepare early. Give her one hour earlier (9am) to prepare while you do your preparing at your normal time. While a man may finish dressing up within 15 minutes, a woman may need 40 minutes for the foundation, make up, adjust her clothe, tie the headgear, find the shoes and jewelries that match her clothe, etc. Screaming at her to hurry up may spoil her day, just handle her with wisdom. Give her extra time to prepare.
11. WOMAN ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR BODY so please, don't use her physical weakness to abuse her. Women fall in love over and over again with men who appreciate their beauty. I thought I had a big set of teeth until hubby told me he loves my dentition. He says it's well set and makes me look so beautiful when I smile. I love flashing my beautiful set of teeth now.
12. WOMEN HATE LIES AND DECIET :you lose your respect and worth in her eyes when you lie, cheat and deceive her a lot.
13. WOMEN ARE INTUITIVE and therefore can pick from their spirits when something goes wrong or about to go wrong. She may not have a logical way to say it. She just knows by intuition that what you are about doing may end up a big disaster or huge success. She may not always be correct but she most times is correct and accurate. Men who want to go far in life must listen to their wives before embarking on certain journey, investments or relationships. Pray well and seek God's face before you proceed. Some men have experienced huge financial loss, untimely death and avoidable fatal accidents because they refused to listen to their wives' advice, plea and warning.
I could go on and on but time won't permit me. It takes knowledge to live with a woman.

There was drama in Masindi town on Monday when a swarm of bees attacked a man suspected to have stolen household items from a resident of Kijura north cell in Masindi District.

Fred Musiime, a resident of Masindi town who witnessed the incident told the Daily Monitor that the bees had covered the man’s head, neck, part of the back and others were in his pockets.

The yet to be identified man who was bare footed and half naked was carrying a black subwoofer and a DVD which he is suspected to have stolen.

“A big group of people followed him as he walked towards Masindi Police station. Others took pictures and shot videos” Musiime said.
He reportedly walked from Kirasa cell in Masindi municipality and moved along the main street and made a stop-over at Masindi police station.

However, police did not come to his rescue forcing him to proceed to Kijura North cell in Masindi town where he is suspected to have stolen the equipment.

Video footages shared by witnesses on social media showed the man wailing as he held the subwoofer in his right hand while covering his head with the left.

According to eyewitnesses, the man who was in the company of Boda Boda cyclists who laughed, hooted and jeered at him went to the resident of a female witch doctor in Kijura ward who poured a liquid on him and the bees vanished.

The Midwestern regional Police spokesperson Mr Julius Hakiza said the incident was not reported to Police but detectives have picked interest in the matter.

“He is suspected to have been bewitched after allegedly stealing some household items,” Mr Hakiza said.

‘Libyan slave market’ footage sparks global fury

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Scandinavia Chief and Global Affairs Analyst, Ayoola Lawal has vehemently condemned the sales of African migrants as slaves in the North African nation of Libya by a CNN report.
Lawal made this known in a telephone conversation with The Nation, during which he stressed that the recent confirmation of the rumor calls for an immediate action by the African Union (AU) leaders.
According to the APC Scandinavia Chief, the AU needs to wedge action immediately to rescue all the victims being sold and in their captivity
“The victims must be rehabilitated and taken care of appropriately. Human slavery is simply a crime against humanity, and it should be properly investigated and all the accomplices in the atrocities and criminal trading must be brought to book by all means.
“The shocking footage of human auctions took the continent a century backward, unbelievable! While some Africans are working indefatigably to polish the image of the continent by scrupulously engaging in cutting-edge solutions and initiatives to position the continent as a new frontier for the world, some criminal troglodytes are busy dragging the continent a century backward by even engaging in such cruel slave trade of their African brothers and sisters,” he lamented.
Ayoola further observed that the African leaders must wake up from their slumber and actively spring into action to save the continent.
“I commend President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame for voicing out against such inhumane trading and serving as a beacon light for the continent in this revealed dark moment in the recent history of the Africa continent for the willingness of his administration to provide refuge to the nearly 30,000 economic African migrants being subjected to unwarranted inhuman abuse in Libya.
“I implore the Federal government of Nigeria and other African leaders to treat this situation as an emergency and spring to action to save their people and see that perpetrators are immediately brought to book in the International Criminal Court and collectively come up with a permanent approach to put an end to this renewed scourge on African continent.

I want to be a farmer, says girl with First Class in Computer Science

All roads led to McPherson University (McU) in Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State, as the faith-based institution held its second convocation where four women finished with First Class. IBRAHIM ADEYEMI reports.
Seriki-Sotayo, the sleepy host community of McPherson University, a faith-based tertiary institution established by the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, came alive last Saturday for the school’s second convocation where 46 graduates received their first degree.
Four of them – all ladies – finished with First Class; a feat that earned the valedictorians coveted academic prizes and accolades from the large audience that graced the event.
Miss Faith Onyekachukwu Ojumah, the Overall Best Graduating Student, who finished with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.84, became emotional after she stepped out to receive her prizes. Being the first born in the family of three, the 19-year-old had promised her mother she would make her proud whenever she completes her university degree.
Sadly, Faith’s mother was missing at the graduation. She died years before Faith got admitted into the school. But her mother’s absence could not deter her father, a poultry farmer, from sharing the joy.
Faith, who received four academic prizes, said her desire was to become the best in her class through “strong will and pure determination” to make her parents proud.
“I was surprised the results of our final year examination were released and I found out that I would be graduating with the highest CGPA. I believe my mom would be proud of this wherever she is now, because it is a promise I made to her. I am only sad that she is no longer with us to witness what I have achieved today,” Faith said in an emotion-laden voice.
Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, Faith said her dream to become a computer scientist could have been truncated by finance. She said her father, a low-income earner, took up the responsibility and struggled to make her and her twin siblings comfortable.
She said: “After my mom passed on, things were difficult for the family because the responsibility to raise me and my siblings fell on my father. Sometimes, dad would get stressed up trying to raise money for his personal projects and for our upkeep. Finance became the main challenge.
“One fact about being a student is that, if you are hungry, it won’t be possible for you to read and assimilate. Each time I felt the impact of this inadequate finance, I would want to give up on schooling, but I bore the pain because there was no reason to surrender. All of these reinforced my determination to succeed and also taught me to be a strong-willed lady with focus on excellence.”
What next after a degree in Computer Science? Faith said her plan was to become an agricultural entrepreneur and not to work for anyone. She has already created a team of software developers with the aim using their computing expertise to bring about revolution in the nation’s agricultural sector.
Delivering the convocation lecture titled:
Reconstructing the shattered education mirror: Hard choices we cannot side step , former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Peter Okebukola, examined the reason the country’s education was not anchored on job creation.
According to him, Nigeria’s education is anchored on “sinking, sandy shores”. Okebukola, who is the Pro-chancellor of Crawford University, said there was need for urgent reforms in tertiary education, given the widespread youth unemployment and what he described as “unimpressive on-the-job performance” of those who got employment.
He listed policy related challenges, outdated curriculum, poor facilities and rigid administrative and management routines as some of the factors responsible for the rot in the education.
He said: “The current education policy expects that the school curriculum at all levels and its implementation should be steered towards entrepreneurship and inculcate values that will foster better service delivery.
“The non-specificity and clarity of intention of this national policy on the direction the education system should take on job creation and service delivery and the weak inter-linkage with other national policies, such as those of science and technology, labour, employment and the service delivery charters, account in large part, for the inability of the education system to respond more forcefully to tackling the challenge of youth unemployment through education.
“If this national policy, in its present imperfect state, was to be implemented to the full, the gap between where we are now and where we should be with regard to job creation and service delivery, would have been significantly narrowed.”
Okebukola noted that education curricula at all levels were rich in content, but he added that they were found to be overloaded in the wrong areas.
He added: “The teacher factor would appear to be one of the most significant in the discussion on inhibitions to production of youth with job creation and good service delivery potentialities. Many teachers have shallow knowledge of their teaching subjects and worse still, shallower knowledge and skills in entrepreneurship to positively influence their students. The paradigm of preparation of these teachers largely accounts for this sad situation.
“We admit mainly people who are academically weak and emotionally unwilling into teacher education programmes. With low self-esteem and minimum motivational propelling power, these teacher trainees are corralled like sheep through the machinery of the teacher preparation process and come out ill-trained and ill-suited for the challenges of 21st Century teaching in a country aspiring to be one of the 20 largest economies by 2020.”
Prof Okebukola said modern facilities were required for effective delivery of a job-creation curriculum, adding that there was need to review curriculum at all levels to remove topics which he called “junk”.
In conclusion, he said: “The value system of our society has been severely compromised. The education system is looked up to as a tool for values re-orientation. All schools should be part of the crusade to inculcate the right values in the youth and adults. Values, such as honesty, diligence, love for country, respect for elders, hard work, ethnic and religious tolerance should be inculcated through appropriate curricular and co-curricular delivery systems.”
The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Niyi Agunbiade, said the school had raised the bar of excellence in the delivery of quality education despite being a nascent tertiary institution. Through dedication to quality and excellence, the VC said members of staff of the school had won several local and international academic laurels.
Agunbiade urged the graduates to be brave and be good ambassadors of the school. He told them to take the risk and use their expertise to create jobs.
The Visitor to the school and General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Reverend Felix Meduoye, told the graduands that they were privileged to be trained in the faith-based school, which had “divine mandate to build a people of excellence and integrity” for service.
He said:“Your training at McPherson University has imbued the traits of a champion in you. As you go into the market place, the resilience of Christ already built inside of you will conquer for you all Goliaths that may be awaiting you.”
Other valedictorians are Ifeoluwa Sule and Oluwabunmi Onafowora of Business Administration, and Flourish Adediji of Biochemistry.

Badoo kills pastor in fresh strike

A pastor was killed yesterday morning by persons suspected to be Badoo members.
The incident occurred at Lajo Road, near transformer in Igbogbo-Bayeku.
The pastor’s widow, Gloria and 10-month-old baby, Goodness, were said to have been found unconscious. They were rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital by policemen from Igbogbo Division.
The attack occurred few hours after acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal met with all stakeholders at the palace of the Ikorodu monarch, Oba Abdulrasheed Shotobi on the menace of ritual killings.
It was gathered that the assailants smashed the head of the pastor identified as Victor Kanayo with two big stones, which were said to have been found beside him.
The Nation gathered that the murderers cut the iron bars on the window of the bungalow the family lived in before entering the house.
This is coming on the heels of several efforts by the police to contain the resurgence of the Badoo killings which died down after massive raids of several shrines in Agbowa and Imota axis suspected to be the base of the cultists.
According to sources, the pastor and his family were the only ones living in the building because the landlord moved out some months ago as a result of increased insecurity.
The source said: “The pastor was an easy going person. His wife and child are unconscious as I speak to you. They were rushed the general hospital. The police took them there.”
Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP) said some persons have been arrested in connection with the murder.
He said the police had commenced investigation into the case, adding that the command was digging into the pastor’s past to be sure there was no connection between his past and murder.
Oti stated that the look into his past was sequel to a human skull tattooed on the deceased’s shoulder, which detectives believe had cultism connotations.
He said: “Around 7am, at Offin, Igbogbo, Lagos, a suburb of Ikorodu town, one Victor Kanayo, a male person and a pastor was murdered.
“The command has made a couple of arrests and suspects are being questioned with a view to discover the author of the heinous crime. The Commissioner of Police has also dispatched a team of crack detectives to unravel those behind the murder, dig into the past of the victim and see if there is a correlation between his past and his fate.
“The issue of his past before he became a born again Christian is of interest to the police because of a human skull tattoo drawn on his left arm which gives the victim away as one who may have belonged to any of the dreaded cult groups. Investigation into case is ongoing. Findings will be made public as usual by the CP.”
