BEING A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED TO THE PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBBLIC OF NIGERIA BY THE BENUE STATE STUDENTS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON 11TH APRIL, 2018.
Following the negligence of the Federal Government to endorse and effectively support the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition And Ranches Establishment Law(2017) which is the sure solution to ending farmers/herders crisis, Benue State Students Assembly resolved that a seven (7) day ultimatum effective from today 11th April 2018 be given to the President and the Federal Government to stop the gruesome murder in Benue State.
Failure to total compliance of this ultimatum which will result to the total shutdown of all tertiary institutions in the state in order to enable students go on a necessary break to commence a mass self defense action in solidarity with the Open Grazing Prohibition an Ranches Establishment Law as implemented by a legally constituted legislative house of the Benue State Government.
The Assembly further agreed that:
1. Benue students home and in the diaspora deeply and sincerely appreciate and align with the Executive Governor of Benue state, Chief Dr. Samuel Ortom for providing a lasting solution to this menace and in solidarity to this, after this seven(7) day period, all federal roads running through Benue State will be blocked completely.
2. If the killings persist after this seven (7) day ultimatum, the amnesty program embarked upon by the Benue State Government be suspended in order to encourage self defense and protection.
3. All commercial activities will remain on a halt in Benue state after the elapse of this ultimatum till a lasting solution is brought to the incessant killings of Benue citizens by the lawless Fulanis in the disguise of herdsmen.
4. Within this seven day period, we call on the Federal government to with a matter of urgency, rebuild the damaged towns by this uncivilized, aggressive and murderous herdsmen. The rebuilding of these towns should be accompanied by necessary relief materials to those displaced by the actions of these monsters in human form.
5. After this period, without receiving any positive result as yearned for by the students, the students will further consult with the international community with a call to declare Benue state an independent state.
Mr. President Sir, as legitimate students of Benue state, we await your response within this seven day period running from today 11th April 2018 – Wednesday 18th April 2018. Our next line of action as stated above takes effect immediately at the elapse of this period.
